Cabrini helps participants break the cycle of homelessness and supports those struggling with mental illness and/or chemical dependency achieve greater self-reliance, health, and well-being. Cabrini provides access to affordable housing within PPL buildings and with private property owners, and the ongoing supports needed for people to maintain housing. The program provides an asset-based, empowering approach to help individuals move from homelessness and isolation to renewed hope and lasting stability. Cabrini’s work is integral to the mission of PPL to build the hope, assets, and self-reliance of individuals and families who have lower incomes by providing transformative affordable housing and employment readiness services. A nonprofit offering a broad range of integrated services, PPL is addressing racial equity as a strategic priority. Our equity statement: “PPL strives to be an equitable and inclusive organization committed to elevating the voices of the communities we serve that are disproportionately affected by systemic inequities.”
While COVID has not fundamentally changed PPL or our commitment to our mission, the pandemic has laid bare and intensified inequities that already existed among the people we serve—inequities in income, employment, health, education, transportation, and access to technology. PPL has pivoted in many ways to ensure community needs are met as participants experience lost income and increased impact of inequity. We have prioritized services to the people who are most vulnerable, shifted to virtual environments, and deployed additional support, all while implementing new health protocols and preparing for the economic aftermath of this crisis.
Those that we serve are in need of emergency assistance, mental health consultation, and community activities to counter isolation. Any monetary donation will go to meeting these needs. CLICK HERE to learn more.
Cabrini staff consistently work with PPL’s Volunteer Manager to develop new volunteer roles and projects that engage community members with program participants. Zarah Augustine, PPL’s Volunteer Program Manager, welcomes the opportunity to work with Pax Christi parishioners and can be contacted at zarah.augustine@ppl-inc.org.
Dana came to PPL’s Cabrini Supportive Housing after experiencing long-term homelessness and moving in and out of shelters. Since moving into a PPL apartment, he has shown exemplary drive and perseverance in pursuit of his goals. “Despite significant health problems, Dana never complains, and always puts one foot in front of the other, navigating through the complex systems of housing with proficiency,” says Brad, PPL staff.
