Engaging with St. Stephen's Human Services

ST. STEPHEN'S HUMAN SERVICES

The mission of St. Stephen's Human Services is ending homelessness. Our primary goal is to support people experiencing homelessness in achieving permanent, affordable housing. We meet people where they are, working together toward self-sufficiency and housing stability.

How COVID-19 has Affected Our Work

St. Stephen’s has had to elevate program priorities to ensure that the unsheltered living in encampments, cars, or similar dwellings have the information, supplies, and food that they need to safely survive outdoors amid the pandemic and MN winter; and intensely identify the highest risk individuals sleeping outside and moving those individuals to hotels.

Our shelter programs moved to a hotel location in May 2020 and anticipates staying through March 2021.

Our Street Outreach team began incorporating a public health approach to our regular service delivery to people experiencing unsheltered homeless by providing food, water, and PPE. The team screens and encourages testing; maps and visits encampments; and works collaboratively with other providers and local government. The team moved from a 5 to 7 days per week schedule to support increased community needs.

We supported our essential, front line staff with hazard pay of 1.5 times the normal rate, covering expanded staffing hours for Street Outreach and Shelter.
