Mental Health and Spirituality Support Group
We don’t receive wisdom, we discover it for ourselves after a journey which no one can take for us or spare us, for it is a point of view about things. –Marcel Proust
Kris Joseph, parishioner, spiritual director, and licensed psychologist, writes:
Mental illness is neither a personal weakness nor a choice, rather a biochemical condition affecting the brain. There are a variety of kinds and degrees of mental illness, with depression and anxiety disorders the most common. With support and treatment, often symptoms can be managed. People with mental illness are people with many capabilities and talents, likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses. Often one’s struggle with mental illness allows courage in the face of pain, deeper spiritual connections, and compassion for others to emerge, as seems often to be the case when challenged by significant illness.
At Pax Christi, the Mental Health and Spirituality Group is an opportunity for participants who have mental health issues to both give and receive support, to make a deeper connection with God and oneself, and to be exposed to tools which might help make one’s life more manageable.
Did You Know? The Mental Health and Spirituality Group meets on the first Thursday of each month from 3:00-4:30pm, and is facilitated by Kris Joseph, M.A. L. P. For more information, please contact Jane Schmitz, 952-405-7238 or jschmitz@paxchristi.com.
