Fr. Tim Power Health Update
April 29, 2012
Back in February I reported to you that I began taking the drug “aranesp.” I must say that there really are miracle drugs out there. It is not a cure for the cancer but a temporary way to reverse its effects. As we approach May I am back biking, planning to plant my summer flowers, and feeling more like a normal person than I have since the first of the year.
I know that it is not just the drug that has helped me but lots and lots of prayers. Each day as I say my morning prayers, I wrap my Prayer Shawl around me and feel the support of so many people. Thank you – thank you!

PS – I was very moved that so many at the last Blood Drive donated blood in honor of me as I live with this bone marrow disorder. Just a reminder that the next blood drive is May 14th.
February 21, 2012 As some of you know my year got off to a bumpy start health wise. Early January was filled with clinic visits and hospital tests. This led to a weeklong stay in the hospital where a blood marrow test led to the diagnosis of “myelodysplasia” (a cancer of the blood marrow that hinders the development of red blood cells). This sometimes progresses to leukemia but that has not happened in my case at this point. This led to a visit to the Blood Marrow Transplant Center at the U of M. A transplant is the only total cure for myelodlsplasia. I was not considered a candidate for a transplant at this time. The next step was a visit to an infectious disease specialist to rule out other things going on in my body (my kidneys are good, my liver is good, I do not have TB, etc.)
On February 14, I began a treatment of “aranesp” (helps promote growth of red cells). After a week, I can report an increase in energy (up until then, I was sleeping 14 plus hours a day).
I feel I have the best doctors available and for the time being have suspended presiding at liturgies so as to focus on regaining my energy. I feel so lucky to have the support of so many prayers. Thank you.
