Dinner with a Perfect Stranger: An Invitation Worth Considering By David Gregory

The mysterious envelope arrived on Nick Cominsky’s desk. Although his 70-hour workweek has already eaten into his limited family time, Nick can’t pass up the opportunity to see what kind of plot his colleagues have hatched...The normally confident, cynical Nick soon finds himself thrown off balance, drawn into an intriguing conversation with a baffling man who comfortably discusses everything from world religions to the existence of heaven and hell. And this man who calls himself Jesus also seems to know a disturbing amount about Nick’s personal life. As the evening progresses, their conversation touches on life, God, meaning, pain, faith, and doubt—and it seems that having Dinner with a Perfect Stranger may change Nick’s life forever.

CENTERING PRAYER

Second and Fourth Thursday of each month in Room 221

Centering Prayer is the practice of silencing mind and body. This method of quieting our minds and bodies allows us to be aware and receptive to God's presence. It is not meant to replace other forms of prayer.  Rather, it adds depth to all prayer.  It is simply resting in God beyond thoughts, words, and emotions.

EXPLORING MIGRATION: A FAITH JOURNEY

Migrants and refugees are not pawns on the chessboard of humanity. They are children, women, and men who leave or are forced to leave their homes for various reasons, who share a legitimate desire for knowing and having, but above all, for being more.” ~Pope Francis ~ JustFaith Ministries’ new eight-week program, Exploring Migration: A Faith Journey, invites participants to formulate a personal response, inspired by their Christian beliefs, to the 21st century reality of migration. The module is designed for small groups of 8–12 and explores some of the central questions related to the reality of migration on a global level and in the U.S. context. The eight sessions provide historical, biblical, and theological perspectives and suggest ways participants can take faithful action for God’s people.

LABYRINTH WALK – WISDOM OF THE BODY

Tuesday, November 6, 6:30–8:30pm, Dorothy Day Hall      RSVP
We have all heard the phrases “follow your heart,” “listen to your inner voice,” "trust your gut.” These are all ways we receive intuitive guidance. Intuition is a body experience, an inner resource that gives us direction towards our hope and dreams and finding meaning in life. Walking the labyrinth is one way to access our inner wisdom. The labyrinth is a walking meditation, a path of prayer and a safe space to open to our intuitive guidance. The evening will include a brief workshop followed by an indoor candlelit labyrinth walk. For questions and to RSVP, contact Carrie Chevalier Mosher, carrie@cycleofwholeness.com.

CAST INTO THE DEEP

Second Monday of each month, 6:00pm
The second season of the adult faith formation series Cast Into the Deep will focus on Bishop Robert Barron’s video series Catholicism: The Pivotal Players. Participants will learn about six people—saints, artists, mystics, and scholars—who not only shaped the life of the Church but changed the course of western civilization. Through Bishop Barron’s beautifully produced videos, visit the countryside where St. Francis gathered a group of friars and revived the Church. Explore where St. Thomas Aquinas lived, learned, and wrote. See the places where St. Catherine of Siena ministered and prayed. Trek through England to where Blessed John Henry Newman and G.K. Chesterton left their mark and sparked an English Catholic revival. And through unprecedented HD footage, marvel at the extraordinary art of Michelangelo, from his David statue in Florence, to the Pietà at St. Peter's, to the Sistine Chapel.

The series will take place in the Hall of Martyrs. There will be an optional meal served at 6:00pm. An introduction followed by DVD viewing at 6:30pm. There will be table and large group discussion from 7:45–8:15pm. Prayer/Eucharist Adoration will be 8:15–8:30pm in the Thomas Merton Chapel. The nursery will be available with minimum 10-day notice. ENGAGED COUPLES RETREAT

Saturday, November 17, 2018, 8:30am–7:30pm
Engaged couples are expected to participate in a marriage preparation retreat. The tradition of "retreat" is an ancient one, especially for people of faith. Scripture tells us many stepped out of the normal rhythm of daily life to reflect on one's journey and response to God's call. Even Jesus took time in quiet places to draw more deeply into the mystery of God's will. From this example we lift up the value and opportunity to retreat for some concentrated time to focus on your marriage. Pax Christi provides a retreat option for both members ($50/couple) and non-members ($75) preparing to celebrate the sacrament of marriage. This day long experience is facilitated by staff and mentor couples from the PREPARE ministry of the parish. Couples are encouraged to register for a retreat as early in the preparation process as possible. For more information please call the parish office, 952-941-3150.
